I have the opportunity the buy an old 1911 made by Ithaca. The slide is a great fit. It does not rattle like the ones I was around in the military, and the rifling looks good also. I don't have the serial number. I was wondering how much it could be worth before putting down money. Is there an on-line site where you can enter the serial number to find the age of an Ithaca 16 gauge double barrel hammerless serial 848917? Go to diamondgunsmithing on the internet and enter your.

The new Ithaca site doesn't have the serial number finder, I just picked up a 65% model 37 16ga with a sn of 82,829 and would like to know approximately when it was made.

It looks like a 1948 gun to me. But it falls into the range of the 'S' guns. On your barrel does it say Model 37S ? And does it have a vent rib?

Yes is has a vent rib. I dont know about the S, the serial number on the barrel ends right at the barrel threads, I didnt recall seeing the choke stamps either, Ill have to get it out of the safe and check.
Someone should post and sticky the sn list, seems like the majority of the posts are for birthdays..

The serial number list that most of us work off of is from Walt Snyder's book on the History of the Model 37 & 87 Featherlight, and is copyrighted. Anyone who has read Mr. Snyder's book cannot help but appreciate the amount of work and dedication it took to do such a thorough job of research as he obviously did. This book is not inexpensive, but is worth every penney. I have loved Ithaca shotguns since the mid 60's, but I had never learned so much about them as I did in the first three nights of reading his book. If you can afford it I strongly recommend you buy his book. You won't regret it.
Your gun certainly sounds like a Model 37S. In 1948 Ithaca only made two 37 models with a ventilated rib, the 37T and the 37S. If you look on your receiver were the serial number is I'm sure you will find an S stamped near it, just above or below the serial number. The Model 37R was a solid rib gun.
Congratulations on a nice find !

One last question.
How was the stock originally finished? The only thing wrong with the gun is the poor finish condition on both the bluing and the stock. It looks like there is/was varnish on the wood and it is chipping off. I plan to strip it, finish it and re cut the checkering on the stock and fore end.
The blueing is almost entirely gone on the magazine tube, and is showing very light pitting on a couple places. If the wood looks nice after refinishing I'll reblue it.
Not bad for $100, looking forward to dusting some pigeons this afternoon with it.
