Over time, uninstalling applications, altering system settings, removing hardware and making other changes to Windows Vista can damage the integrity of the registry, leaving behind abandoned keys which are no longer in use by any program, service or device. Sometimes certain changes can create errors in the registry that impact system operation and interfere with the completion of critical business-related tasks. Several different programs are available on the Internet that can clean up the registry. You can utilize these applications to automatically search for and remove registry keys that have no association to any existing program or service or that have the potential to cause system conflicts.

1.

Press 'Windows + R' to open the Run window. Enter 'regedit.exe' (without quotes) into the dialog box. Click 'OK' to run Registry Editor.

2.

Confirm the 'Computer' folder is selected. Click 'File,' then 'Export.' Enter a name for the file and then save the registry backup to an external device, such as a flash drive or CD.

3.

Close Registry Editor. Click 'Start.' Right-click 'Computer' in the window that pops up and then select 'Properties' in the resulting sub-menu. Click the 'System Protection' tab.

4.

Click 'Create.' Name the restore point 'Registry Clean' (without quotes) and then click 'Create.' Click 'OK' when the message 'The Restore Point Was Created Successfully' appears. Company of heroes patch 2.101 to 2.601.

Windows5.

Download, install and run an application such as CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner or Registry Mechanic (see Resources).

6.

Select the option to scan or analyze the registry for errors or outdated keys. The scan can take several minutes to complete.

7.

Choose the option to repair detected errors in the Windows Vista registry, following the scan. Restart the computer once this is done.

Tips

  • If you're using Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, right-click the results and then choose 'Select All' from the context menu.
  • If the system is negatively effected after repairing the registry, load the backup from the external device or run System Restore and select the restore point you created.
